Workshop on sea ice deformation in physics and engineering

Alternative title: Workshop om havisens deformasjon

Awarded: NOK 0.15 mill.

Sea ice dynamics and deformation play an important role for the polar environment. Driven by wind and ocean currents, large volumes of sea ice become rafted and ridged. Such deformation is a multiscale processes and properties that are not sufficiently understood. Norway has a long traditionin studying sea ice deformation from different point of views and on different scales: Polar climate and sea ice physics, Arctic technlogy and engineering, Arctic ecology, remote sensing and forecasting. The proposed workshop will be a first step to gather researchers from different disciplines to initiate multi-scale collaboration and research projects to better understand sea ice deformation and its environmental impact, especially on Arctic climate. The workshop will take place on a ship from Hurtigruten between Tromsø and Trondheim, linking two important locations of sea ice research communities.

Sea ice plays an important role for the polar environment. Examples are its impact on polar (and global) climate through reflection of solar radiation (albedo) and moderation of atmosphere-ocean heat exchange, its influence on the polar ecosystem as a habitat of life, and its danger for shipping and offshore activities. An important factor for many topics is the dynamics of sea ice, its drift and deformation: driven by wind and ocean currents, large volumes of sea ice become rafted and ridged. Such deformation is stronger, the thinner the ice, as it is currently happening in the Arctic. However, deformation depends on multiscale processes and properties that are not sufficiently understood. Norway has a long traditionin studying sea ice deformation from different point of views and on different scales: Polar climate and sea ice physics, Arctic technlogy and engineering, Arctic ecology, remote sensing and forecasting. The proposed workshop will be a first step to gather researchers from different dsicipline to intiate multi-scale collaboration and research projects to better understand sea ice deformation and its environmental impact. The workshop will take place on a ship from Hurtigruten between Tromsø and Trondheim, linking two important locations of sea ice research communities (and inviting those form other places).
