POSEIDON II (Project Development)

Alternative title: POSEIDON II (Prosjekt Utvikling)

Awarded: NOK 0.49 mill.

The project further develops the POSEIDON research project for submission to the 2021 AdG Round. The project will develop a methodological and empirical frame for understanding the historical development of political duties. By doing so the intention is to enable a research programme with the capacity to change how we think about the place of “duties” contra a more dominant contemporary discourse on rights. The project will explore, inter alia, the potential for drawing upon the global Covid experience and the tensions it has raised between national and international duties – in which the obligations of individuals vs state duties have been foregrounded.

The project will further develop the applicant's prior research on the history of duties and political obligation in preparation for a larger research bid. The project will build upon the earlier ERC project proposal, POSEIDON, in ways that expand its insights empirically and theoretically. The new project will focus mainly on the political dimensions of duties and do this more thoroughly at the national and international scale. More specifically, the project will develop a methodological and empirical frame for understanding the historical development of political duties. By doing so the intention is to enable a research programme with the capacity to change how we think about the place of “duties” contra a more dominant contemporary discourse on rights. The project will explore, inter alia, the potential for drawing upon the global Covid experience and the tensions it has raised between national and international duties – in which the obligations of individual and state duties have been foregrounded.
