The change toward a low-carbon economy will lead to increased demands to the environmental performance of our buildings, as wel as knowledge regarding environmentally sound construction technology. A substantial body of research suggests that Natural ventilation and the possibilty for occupants to open windows has a significant impact on their well-being. This mode of ventilation has also been found to reduce heating and cooling loads during the transition seasons (i.e. spring and fall). However, building concepts utilizing natural ventilation alone have in some cases been shown to perform poorly during winter season in Norway, and natural ventilation alone is therefor not likely to be the right solution for large scale implementation in the Norwegian building industry. The concept of hybrid ventilation is on the therefore assumed to be more suitable, as it combines natural and mechanical ventilation and may bring the upsides of both technologies at a reduced cost. Hybrid ventilation has the potential to improve the performance of building ventilation systems in future and existing buildings by improving the indoor climate quality ans occupant satisfaction, reducing energy use, reducing costs and reducing CO2 emissions from materials. They may also improve robustness and functioning of ventilation systems by introducing simpler and more reliable systems. They are also especially suitable for retrofits as they are less space demanding than traditional mechanical systems. This project aims to develop knowledge, concepts, technologies and strategies for hybrid air conditioning of sustainable buildings and through this facilitate the introduction of hybrid ventilation concepts as a real and well-documented alternative to traditional mechanical ventilation concepts.The project works through several research activities with the aim of making hybrid ventilation more attractive and accessible. The most important ongoing activities are: - Follow-up of results from the pilot building Nydalen Vertikal. The office part of the building is Norway's first naturally ventilated building at a near-zero energy level in accordance with The Futurebuilt standard (nZEB). The research project has carried out a number of measurements and surveys in the building, with the aim of spreading reliable documentation about how the building works in practice. The results will be summarized in a scientific article. - Barriers for natural and hybrid ventilation. Work is underway on a report summarizing existing barriers and solutions for hybrid ventilation with today's building engineering requirements. - CO2 emissions from technical facilities. A lot of material has been produced regarding the lca impact of hybrid solutions, partly in collaboration with the research project Grønn VVS - Control systems. Work is underway at Aalborg University to develop a tool for the development of solutions and control algorithms for hybrid ventilation

Samfunnsomstillingen mot en lavkarbonøkonomi vil medføre strengere krav til miljø og økt etterspørsel etter kunnskap om miljøriktige løsninger for bygg og anlegg. Naturlig ventilasjon og mulighet for brukerstyrt vindusåpning har gjentatte ganger blitt vist å ha positiv effekt på brukerfornøydhet og opplevd komfort, samtidig som det kan redusere energibehov til ventilasjon og kjøling på sommeren og i overgangssesongene. Men bygningskonsepter med ren naturlig ventilasjon i Norsk klima krever spesialtilpassede løsninger som er lite egnet for gjennomføring i stor skala i den Norske byggebransjen. Hybrid ventilasjon kombinerer fordelene til til både naturlig og mekanisk ventilasjon og kan, gitt riktig utførelse, oppnå forbedrede ytelser innen inneklima og energibruk. Bakgrunnen for innovasjonsideen er relatert til følgende faktorer: - Tekniske systemer i moderne bygg har blitt for kompliserte, som medfører høye investerings og driftskostnader. - Moderne VVS-installasjoner står for betydelige klimagassutslipp (opp mot 40% av totale utslipp fra bygget) - Det pågår i dag begrenset forskning på innovative og miljøvennlige løsninger for ventilering i Norsk klima. - Hybrid ventilasjon er spesielt godt egnet for bruk i eksisterende bygg, og viktig for oppgradering av bygningsmassen. Dette prosjektet har som mål å utvikle kunnskap, konsepter, teknologier og strategier for hybrid klimatisering av bærekraftige bygninger og gjennom dette legge til rette for innføring av hybride ventilasjonskonsepter som et reelt og veldokumentert alternativ til tradisjonelle mekaniske ventilasjonskonsepter.
