Aktiv magnetisk måling av brønnposisjon (AMM)

Alternative title: Active magnetic ranging while drilling - a new method for accurate well positioning and anti-collision while drilling.

Awarded: NOK 13.5 mill.

Project Period:

2021 - 2024

The project intends to develop a new concept for Active Magnetic Ranging (AMM) to be able to hit neighbouring wells down hole if that is desirable or to avoid collision with other wells if this is the scope. The concept is to transmit an electrical current through the formation to metal components of the neighbouring well and down these components and back through the formation to the well being drilled. By measuring the magnetic field generated from the electric current in the neighbouring well, it is possible to calculate the exact position of the other well. This new system will be central for increased oil recovery, called "Connecting wells /reservoirs". This will contribute to increased production and increased service life of existing fields. Furthermore, it will more than halve the time used to drill a relief well that could be necessary if an uncontrolled blowout appears. Today, AMM is only available by use of cable operations. This method is time consuming and will entail significant non-productive time in the drilling process with associated increased costs. Therefore, AMM is currently only used in connection with undesirable situations within drilling and wells, such as an uncontrolled blowout. By using the new AMM technology, 95% of non-productive time can be avoided due to reduced use of cable operations. This will reduce costs for the users of the technology. In the innovation project, a device will be developed allowing for accurate position of the drill bit during drilling. Key activities will be around equipment for generating and measuring magnetic fields, associated energy source. The technology also has application in petroleum related drilling operations and construction of geothermal wells that will function as downhole radiators to harvest heat from the earth's interior.
