This project will reduce the oil and gas industry's disposable use of industrial plastics. The industry has an extensive use of pipes and tubulars. In order to protect these tubulars, they use extensive amounts of protectors made from plastic. Today, these protectors are for the most part produced abroad and used once, then discarded. In the Norwegian and British Oil sector alone, yearly protector consumption is estimated at 38,000 tons. BEWI has patented a new type of pipe protector which will be included in a subscription scheme.By introducing a subscription scheme to the customers the project aim to increse the reuse of plastic products that will have an immediate effect in reducing the amount of plastic waste and to ensure that these by the end of their life is collected for material recycling. The projects includes establishment of a washing line and a recycling plant in Kristiansund, and the production of the protector in Stjørdal. The project aims to map out all the unknown challenges and solutions that are inherently embedded in setting up and running this recycling chain. How do we conduct logistics and inspection for reuse of the protector? How do we establish a sustainable washing? And how do we establish a methodology to ensure that we get a stable and high qualtity of the recycled materials that will be used to produce new protectors? Establishing local recycling stations will further enhance the potential in logistics and combined with the right technology, will optimize the correct ratio of reuse and recycling to reduce our common goal: less plastic waste and reduced a carbon footprint. The applicant company is BEWI Energy. We have developed the new and patented universal protector and we are now seeking to establish a working subscription for our invention. Our project partners are BEWI Norplasta (production new protectors), NorSea Logistics (responsible for logistics, cleaning and material recycling) and the research institute SINTEF.
