Methane (CH4) is a greenhouse gas approximately 28-36 times more potent than CO2. This means that each unit of CH4 released into the atmosphere, equals 28-36 CO2 units. Capture, sequestration, utilization and storage (CCUS) of CO2 has a high focus and is an important measure to reduce the total emission of greenhouse gases. Unfortunately, methane has not had the same focus, perhaps due to the difficulty of reducing methane to CO2 prior to CCUS. Reduction of methane requires temperatures of 300degC and higher, which means that methane slip from landfills, agriculture, biogas production and wastewater treatment require much energy to heat the gas prior to reducing it. Until recently, this has been impossible to do efficiently. This project aimed to examine if it was possible to verify new technology to reduce CH4 to CO2 and potentially utilize the CO2 in green house production of produce. It has not been possible to verify the technology within the boundaries of the project and it was therefore terminated without sufficient results.

Flere potensielle brukere og kunder har vært kontaktet i prosjektet. Dette arbeidet ble utført i 2021, men ble satt på pause da det ble klart at det tekniske arbeidet ble forsinket og etterhvert ikke mulig å gjennomføre på grunn av eksterne forhold. Prosjektet har dessverre ikke nådd de mål som ble satt.
