Light is the minimum factor for achieving a high yield and quality in Norwegian greenhouse production. Cucumber is a light-demanding culture that needs artificial light for best photosynthesis and growth. Cucumber growers use high pressure sodium lamps (HPS), that use a lot of energy and provide a lot of heat. Heat and moisture are vented out of the greenhouse and energy is lost. New lighting technology with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) gives plants more light per watt of energy and less heat, so that less energy is lost. To make the best possible use of the LED lamps, the light wave distribution and light intensity must be adapted to the plants' needs and related to other light sources such as sunlight and HPS lamps. Better knowledge of plant species' response to light wave distribution can increase yields and improve external and internal quality. The light intensity of the LED lamp can be regulated stepless, and new knowledge can result in light no longer being a minimum factor, but factors such as CO2 concentration or humidity. We aim for high photosynthesis and growth to justify high investment costs in LED lamps. We will test whether the use of LED lamps will reduce the need for ventilation so that the CO2 concentration and photosynthesis will be higher and contribute to increased growth and yield compared to HPS lamps, thus reducing CO2 emission in cucumber production. In the project, Norwegian producers, organized in NGF Agurkklubben, work together with the researchers at NMBU and NIBIO to increase knowledge on the use of LED lights in cucumbers. Based on production at the various producers, where both growth and energy consumption are registered and evaluated, basic knowledge on the effect of wavelengths on photosynthesis and growth and use of light for energy efficient greenhouse production, we will develop competitive year-round production of cucumber that will ensure Norwegian consumers access to sustainable Norwegian-produced cucumber year-round.
