Subject Fields:

This is a continuation of the project DARE2C (2017-2021), based on the somewhat crazy idea that using aluminium as reinforcement in concrete could enable the use of more environmentally friendly cements. Aluminium cannot be used as reinforcement in today's commercially available concretes because it corrodes in the highly alkaline environment. Likewise, the development of more environmentally friendly clay-substituted cements is hampered by the resulting low alkalinity of these concretes, which is not compatible with regular steel reinforcement. Thus, DARE2C ambitiously aimed at hitting two birds with one stone by combining Al reinforcement with low-CO2 concrete. Now, four years later, new low-CO2 concretes have been developed with good mechanical properties and Al compatibility, and several possible Al alloys have been identified as suitable for concrete reinforcement, including some which may be produced by recycling. The success of the DARE2C project has increased the initial partners' confidence in the concept, and brought on the interest of more companies, broadening the consortium for phase 2. In this project we will evolve, generalise and enable commercialisation of the Al-reinforced concrete that was developed in the DARE2C project. The participating partners include representatives from the whole value chain needed to realise Al-reinforced structures.

The participating partners include representatives from the whole value chain needed to realise Al-reinforced structures. The research will focus on: - Closing an initial time window for corrosion where hydrogen gas evolution could hamper reinforcement adhesion to the binder. - Setting generalised requirements for the use of a wider range of clays. - Documenting long-term properties and durability of the low-CO2-concrete. - Documenting how structural design methods can be adapted for Al-reinforced concrete structures, and providing design examples. - Identifing optimal reinforcement designs, alloys and tempering. - Optimising and up-scaling production methods for Al reinforcement from scrap and post-consumed metal.
