The construction sector accounts globally for about 40% of energy and process-related emissions and the trend is increasing with population growth being the primary driver. In Norway, emissions from the building and construction sector account for approximately 15% of national emissions and a reduction in this sector will be decisive in achieving the national target of a 50% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030 and 90-95% by 2050. The shift towards a low-carbon economy will lead to stricter environmental requirements and increased demand for knowledge about environmentally friendly solutions for building and construction in the market. Environmental impact related to HVAC installations has traditionally been of little focus in the construction industry, and in life cycle analyses of buildings this is usually omitted. However, the focus in the industry is changing, and several players and builders are now also focusing on HVAC. The overall idea of the project is to establish a new service based on methodology and best practice for designing and realizing HVAC installations with the lowest possible environmental impact. This will make participating players market-leading providers of services in a market that imposes strict requirements on low greenhouse gas emissions in the face of the transition to a circular society. The focus of this project is on HVAC installations, but the project will also form a methodology that can be followed when analyzing other installations. The amount of greenhouse gas emissions from HVAC installations, a lack of research and our preliminary work indicate that there is a great potential for optimization in both material, system and design choices.
