NANO2021-Nanoteknologi og nye materiale

Nanoparticle-based diagnostic solutions

Alternative title: Nanoteknologiske diagnostikkløsninger

Awarded: NOK 14.6 mill.

Lybe Scientific is a newly established biotechnology company within the molecular diagnostic field based on high quality transdisciplinary research at NTNU. Lybe Scientific’s first product is a sample preparation solution currently used for COVID-19 diagnostics with about 6,2 million units sold nationally and internationally during the pandemic. This solution brings out the strength from researchers within molecular biology and chemical engineering. With basis in the underlying technology; Lybe’s opportunity is to continue to build on this platform technology and the vision is to be a premier provider of cost effective products for a wide range of life science and diagnostic purposes. The current application seeks to cover Lybe Scientific’s need for R&D activities around new functionalized nanoparticles for RNA and DNA applications in a selection of biological sample materials. The primary objectives are to expand the product portfolio of solutions for different clinical application areas and to establish efficient production processes of the solutions.

The current application seeks to cover Lybe Scientific’s need for R&D activities around new functionalized nanoparticles for RNA and DNA applications in a selection of biological sample materials. The primary objectives are to expand the product portfolio of functionalized beads for different clinical application areas and to establish a process for continuous production of magnetic beads. Critical milestones of this project are related to the ability to address the industrial research need for Lybe. The solutions developed must be robust and flexible enough to be implemented for use in large scale in diagnostic settings. If for some reason the solutions have properties making them incompatible with robotic liquid handlers that would be a critical limitation. Next, the second critical research challenge is to be able to improve the nanoparticle production process and hence capacity with continuous production. This is important in order to position Lybe as a true competitor in a highly competitive market.
