Ocean Data Dojo - Building competence in FAIR data management in marine research and citizen science

Awarded: NOK 0.12 mill.

The Ocean Data Dojo will engage experts in Arctic data collection in ocean sciences, Citizen Science for Arctic communities, and scientific data management. The aim is to develop a joint understanding of the current practices and gaps in the data delivery chain from research driven ice-ocean observing and citizen science programs in the Svalbard region. This will be used to provide guidelines for how to establish efficient data delivery chains. Furthermore, the cross disciplinary knowledge and guidelines will be transferred into competence building assets for practical training of research data collectors and data managers at different career levels. Two dedicated workshops will be held to advance the cooperation between data collectors and data managers. The overarching goal is to contribute to a practical implementation of the FAIR principles in research projects building trust in fair sharing and use of research data. The workshops will focus on scientific observations in oceanography and ocean acoustics, and Citizen Science observations of sea ice from vessels (e.g. ASSIST). Well defined and efficient data delivery chains will lead to more data becoming available for reuse in a number of application areas. This will benefit research in Svalbard and thereby support sustainable development of the Svalbard region. The results from the workshops will be published on the Dojo platform and promoted through the partners’ networks including Arctic Council working groups (e.g AMAP, CAFF) and SAON (e.g. CON, ADC). This will enable uptake in the wider research community and local communities in the Arctic. Furthermore, results from the project can contribute to new research and innovation projects in Horizon Europe and bilateral national calls for Arctic science and sustainable development.
