Lavutslippsverdikjede for havbruk til havs

Alternative title: Low emission value chain for open ocean aquaculture

Awarded: NOK 16.7 mill.

Project Number:

328674

Application Type:

Project Period:

2022 - 2024

Funding received from:

Moving aquaculture from sheltered fiords to open oceans presents completely new challenges such as larger waves, stronger winds and long distances to land. We also have limited knowledge of how farmed salmon will behave and thrive out in the open sea. A new value chain must be developed from the production of small fish inshore to aquaculture facilities in the open ocean. At all stages in the new value chain, the project will provide innovations and knowledge that reduce energy consumption, provide low climate and environmental footprints, and offer the salmon good living conditions. The innovations include areas such as small salmon (called post-smolt) in closed sea facilities, electrification of aquaculture facilities and vessels, multi-operational vessels for reduced sea transport, digitally based semi-autonomous operations and decision support, and offshore floating feed that provides reduced feed waste. The participants in the project are seven companies in all parts of the value chain from post-smolt to harvest-ready salmon and eleven research institutions with expertise in relevant areas of knowledge. The project will also have an organized dialogue arena with public and private actors with knowledge and interests in the ocean space. Through the dialogue arena, the project will also contribute to the responsible development of public regulations and monitoring that have not been established today. The project will provide healthy salmon with greenhouse gas emissions per kg which is significantly lower than for meat from agriculture, especially cattle and pigs. It will make a decisive contribution to ocean aquaculture achieving climate and environmental footprint in accordance with the EU's Green Deal and taxonomy and production costs that make it a sustainable alternative to other protein-producing sectors on land and sea. A successful innovation process can lead to an annual value creation in the order of NOK 100 billion by 2050.
