Prof. Magne Olav Sydnes and his team, at the department of chemistry, biosciences and environmental engineering at the University of Stavanger is developing new antibiotics with the ability to degrade when exposed to light. This novel technology has been filed for patent and will allow to combat antibiotic spreading and development of antibiotic resistant bacterias, one of the most important challenges of current medicine. In addition, these new antibiotics will open the door for the development of new structures with higher efficacy to combat infectious diseases. The Qualification project ?PhotoBiotics: Photodegradable antibiotics for reduced antibiotic microbial resistance?in collaboration with the University of Tromsø will investigate the mechanisms of these photodegradable molecules and will develop new structures to broaden the spectrum for treatment of infectious diseases.

The project has generated significant advancements in understnading how the stereo-chemistry is affecting the biological activity of the decomposable antibiotics as well as new compounds with higher decomposition kinetics with high potential for patentability and commercialisation. Patent application has been filed and new patent is under preparation. Business model for the commercialsation of the antibiotics has been refined during discussion with partners and a new plan for establishment of spin-out has been assessed
