Wastefront will develop a novel hydrotreating catalyst to purify pyrolysis oil extracted from end-of-life tyres (ELTs) in a hydrocracking vessel reactor meeting European specifications for commercial fuel. We will also develop the interface technology to integrate the HYFUEL process into our Tyre Derived Oil (TDO) production plant. The outcome will be a cost effective and flexible solution, producing clean and high value fuel while drastically reducing harmful emissions to the environment. We will produce high-value TDO fuel products with very low sulphur content and sell them B2B. We have signed an agreement with the Vitol Group, the largest independent energy trader in the world, working with refiners, oil companies, marketers, and distributors worldwide.

HYFUEL will be a new hydrodesulphurization and hydrocracking-based process to upgrade TDO to high value fuels. It is based on WFAS’ recently patented (WAS-20-1236P - US Serial No. 63/131,997) catalytic approach utilizing cobalt, nickel and molybdenum sulphides. We will design and validate the hydrodesulphurization catalyst system, the hydrocracking vessel and the interface technologies for our solution. Our process will produce fuels meeting the EN590 Euro 6 specification for commercial Diesel by containing a maximum sulphur level of 10ppm and carbon residues of 0.30wt%. The main result of the project will be a process allowing WFAS to set up a fully scalable production line for high value fuels derived from TDO in their TDO production plant. We are planning to gradually switch production to our novel solution and ramp up the output of high-value fuels as the technology is matured.
