The Multiple needle pliers technology has recently got support from Norges forskningsråd. The researchers Lars Engseth and Erik Aunan at Sykehuset Innlandet in Lillehammer and the engineer Jørgen Grønsund at the University of Stavanger have designed and developed a device for facilitating ligament balancing in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This innovation aims to reduce the complications after knee replacement interventions. Thanks to this qualification project in collaboration with the Oslo University Hospital in Ullevål, the prototype has been tested in human knee carcasses for the first time. The results show that the product can vi easily applied, with more reproducible outcomes than the current methodologies. Validé AS Technology Transfer Offices assists product and business development, and we look forward to see this amazing product in the market. During the project, preliminary results were presented to a board with 23 experts in orthopaedics. The feedback received was positive regarding market, since many require this solution to perform better in their surgeries. The feedback regarding the status of the project is that this sound promising but it should be studied in a more realistic setup, that can relate to actual clinical praxis. This is the next step of the project. The results obtained from the research part and the business part prepare for the way to go. Based on this it has been decided to test in a biomechanics setting which includes an ethical committee and is much closer to the clinical practice before testing in real patients. Another outcome was the regulatory navigation, which helped the project to decide on next steps to be preparing for obtaining CE mark.
