Tourism is rapidly ascending the list of the world's most important industries. With growth in the global economy, tourists have arrived in waves of new segments when new markets have been given the opportunity to travel. This has consequences for local communities on the outermost island, in the innermost fjord, on the highest peak and the deepest valley in the tourist destination Norway. The global demand for experiences through travel affects Norwegian rural districts and local communities when they are transformed into tourist destinations. Fundamentally, the product of the tourism sector is an experience that is delivered by a destination to its visitors. The aim of this project is to contribute to research-based innovation in the tourism industry by generating new knowledge and defining characteristics that are crucial for collaborative innovation in tourism. This applies to both company and destination level, within the framework of the tourism ecosystem. The complexity of destinations can be recognized as ecosystems that is closely interwoven with society in general. This also applies within the development of society, through people's values and consumption patterns. The guests' consumption is moved to new industries and creates growth outside the core of the tourism industry. At the same time, tourism is becoming increasingly exposed to competition which requires creativity and innovation among tourism professionals and destinations. Destinations need to develop competitive advantages in order to survive. This requires active participation of each individual actor as well as extensive coordination between actors. But how do you succeed with innovation in an industry so dependent on both public and private actors outside the core of the tourism industry, to be able to develop? What have happened to the explanatory models for innovation and destination development on the way from the tourism product, via the experience economy, to the tourism ecosystem?
