Precision medicine in dyssynchronous heart failure

64 million people live with heart failure (HF) worldwide, with a growing economic burden estimated at 108 billion USD per year. 10-20% of all HF patients suffer dyssynchronous HF (dysHF). Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) with a pacemaker is one of the most effective treatments for such patients: up to 20% of patients recover fully, and 40% experience significant improvement. However, despite more than 20 years of research, 30% of CRT recipients show minimal response and 10% have adverse responses and are left with follow-up at high costs to society. PTOOL has developed a unique hardware and software system – PaCRTool – that enables the measurement of a breakthrough cardiac biomarker for selection of the right dysHF patients (precision medicine) and optimization of CRT (personalized therapy). The system will improve the outcome and effectiveness for hundreds of thousands of dysHF patients and alleviate the heavy economic burden on the healthcare system globally. Indeed, € 1-2 billion are spent on ineffective CRT every year, while only one third of eligible patients receive CRT. The improved cost-effectiveness with PaCRTool will promote utilization and reimbursement of this expensive treatment and provide a Value Based Health Care Solution to all stakeholders. PaCRTool also represents a tech platform with tremendous potential for other cardiac indications, such as atrial fibrillation. The main barriers for PTOOL going forward are related to prevailing technical and market-related challenges. The EIC Accelerator project will enable performing the final maturation of the hardware and software, clinical evaluation and investigation of the PreSens-catheter and start running a Multi Centre Trial at up to 16 European medical centres to accelerate reimbursement and regulatory approvals, leading to market launch in Europe and US. The EIC Accelerator program provides a unique opportunity for us to showcase the potential of our innovation and gain market intelligence.
