Svalbox 2.0 – FAIR geoscientific data from Svalbard

Awarded: NOK 0.50 mill.

The Svalbox 2.0 project strives to make digital models from Svalbard across all scales (from "seismic-scale" mountain-sides to digital drill cores) openly and freely available to the geoscientific community through the FAIR EU-funded repository Zenodo. In addition, the portal places these in a regional geological context. The project develops the existing www.svalbox.no portal to increase its usage and visibility beyond UNIS courses, and has a strong international project team to facilitate this process. New data will be acquired largely in the near-town areas adjacent to the permanent Svalbard research communities (partly as cm-precision time-lapse data), with some infill acquisition of digital outcrop models. Highly visible in-person events will be conducted in Longyearbyen, Barentsburg and Hornsund to make both the general public and the Svalbard research community aware of the capabilities and data offered by Svalbox. An embedded sub-project will utilise the synergies provided by Svalbox to gather dolerite samples related to the circum-Arctic High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) magmatism, and establish a pilot project on linking samples with digital models, and integrating existing samples from various research projects into a systematic geochemical and geochronological analysis programme.
