National Workshop on 3Rs in Aquaculture Research

Awarded: NOK 69,248

The National Workshop on 3Rs in Aquaculture Research (Aqua3R) will be held in Ås, Norway, on January 20, 2022. Aqua3R is a unique platform that will gather representatives from various relevant sectors to discuss the application, challenges, opportunities, and advancements of the 3R (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) framework in aquaculture research. This 1-day workshop underscores the importance of superior animal welfare and the ethical and humane use of experimental animals in excellent science and positive societal outlook towards aquaculture. The workshop will include talks from a government agency (i.e. Mattilsynet), a non-governmental organisation (i.e. Norecopa), a research funding agency (i.e. FHF), universities, research institutes and farming companies. The selected talks will address the science of 3R, explore the institutional and legislative frameworks of its implementation, particularly in Norway, and establish a knowledge-sharing platform for practical experience on the challenges of its application in aquaculture research. Aqua3R 2022 is expected to spotlight the superior code of practice and innovative advances made by the Norwegian governing bodies and the research environment in the country. This will position Norway as a model for the implementation of the 3R principles in aquaculture research.
