Trustworthy Fleet Management of Edge-based Systems

Awarded: NOK 35,730

According to Gartner, by 2022, more than 50% of enterprise-generated data will be created and processed outside the Cloud. This has led to the emergence of Edge computing, which comprises software modules running both in the Cloud and on devices at the edge of the network such as gateways, routers, switches, small base stations, etc. An Edge system consists of software modules running in a fleet of geographically distributed devices, each of which has a unique operation context. For large scale Edge systems with thousands of devices, handling each device manually is not an option as it will inevitably lead to enormous operation effort and cost. Still, effective and tailored solutions for supporting the operation of Edge systems are not yet available. To realize large scale digitalisation, it is critical to advance how to deploy and operate Edge systems (SINTEF), i.e., to perform scalable, yet controlled and trustworthy (I3S) deployments and updates of software on Edge devices. This will form the core of the Fleet project. According to this objective, and to establish long-term collaboration between the two complementary partners, we propose activities involving exchanges of both permanent staff and PhD candidates, with a focus on the following activities: - Intensive research workshop, to trigger research discussions (whiteboard brainstorming) as well as technical work realisation (code camp). Part of the presentations will be open to the public (e.g., MSc and PhD candidates). - Mutual visits of faculty and researchers, including short-term visits (typically 2-3 days) to strengthen point-to-point collaboration and long-term ones to prepare the following up of this project by identifying and developing future programs. - Joint supervision of engineer interns and master students, through the Polytech Nice – Sophia school of engineering and the University of Nice (I3S), and NTNU and the University of Oslo (SINTEF)
