NOAH accepts and exerts final treatment of inorganic hazardous waste originating from consumers and industry at their treatment facilities at Langøya in Southern Norway. Spent sulfuric acid is neutralized with fly ash from waste incineration, forming a gypsum that stabilizes heavy metals and other toxins in the quarries located on the island. Safe removal and handling of environmental toxins are important premises for clean value chains in the industry, but with additional losses of usable resources. The main goal of the ASKEPOTT project will be to develop new and cost-effective solutions for treatment of spent sulfuric acid and fly ash, increased recovery of usable resources and new marketable products. Synthetic gypsum, originating from flue gas cleaning at coal-fired power plants, is a common alternative to natural gypsum in industrial processes. However, with a decrease in electricity generation from coal in Europe, consumers of synthetic gypsum will have to replace their input with natural gypsum already in a few years. The project therefore seeks to develop a process for renewing the value of spent sulfuric acid in the form of a commercial gypsum. The project will also accommodate for upgrading and recovering metals and minerals from waste incineration fly ash. Fly ash contains metals and minerals but, due to low and varying quantities, successful recovery requires large volumes of ash in order to recover values of any significance. Resources will instead be recovered in a sustainable manner by developing robust and tailored solutions based on mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. There will also be a strong focus on minimizing the environmental footprint of the developed processes, including recycling of generated CO2 and the use of environmentally friendly chemicals.
