EyeAM - Digital transformation of meat inspection

Alternative title: EyeAM - digital transformasjon av kjøttkontroll

Awarded: NOK 6.6 mill.

EyeAM shall develop a concept for digital transformation of meat inspection i.e. objective and automated meat inspection solutions, taking advantage of Food Chain Information (FCI) and sensing applied in abattoirs. The primary objective for EyeAM is to define, develop and demonstrate novel solutions for surveillance and control of meat safety, animal welfare and animal health in abattoirs. The secondary objectives include to develop a detailed concept design by system thinking approach including FCI systems and novel data collection from meat inspection. The project will develop and assess systems for automated and objective ante mortem inspection of slaugheter animals. These systems include camera surveillance and other tools that can measure variables for assessing animals fit for slaughter. The assessment of animal cleanliness will also be adressed in the project by developing and testing automated and objective systems. In particular, one of the main tasks in the project will be testing novel technology for monitoring the presence of certain lesions in slaughter pigs that results from APP and Mycoplasma. This could become an automated and objective surveillance tool for diseases with low or variable prevalence in the Norwegian swine population. The project has several collaborating partners from the Norwegian meat industry and both the private and cooperative parts of the industry are involved. The Norwegian University of Life Science (Realtek) is an important research institution involved and will contribute with developing automated systems. The project has a partner in Italy that will contribute with their novel technology for objective and automated meat inspection.

EyeAM shall develop a concept (TRL6) for digital transformation of meat inspection i.e. objective and automated meat inspection solutions, taking advantage of Food Chain Information (FCI) and sensing applied in abattoirs. Primary objective: EyeAM shall define, develop and demonstrate novel solutions for surveillance and control of meat safety, animal welfare and animal health in abattoirs. Secondary objectives: 1. Detailed concept design by system thinking approach. 2. Food chain information system and meat inspection. 3. Automated and objective ante mortem inspection of slaughter animals. 4. Automated and objective assessment of slaughter animals’ cleanliness. 5. Automated Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) surveillance in abattoir
