Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is used clinically for the treatment of different solid cancers (carcinomas) and is based on three non-toxic components: Photosensitizer, light, and oxygen. Upon light activation of the photosensitizer, energy is transferred to molecular oxygen resulting in generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with cytotoxic potential. Some evidence suggests that using differentiation-promoting agents such as vitamin D may enhance PDT efficacy. With this project, we aim to obtain in vivo proof of concept for a new combination treatment against difficult-to-treat carcinomas. If successful, the project will allow us to select a combination treatment suitable for clinical development.

Prosjektet lyktes med å sende inn patentsøknad, men var tvunget til å trekke søknaden før publisering pga. manglende kommersielt potensiale. Konseptet vil bli undersøkt nærmere på forskningsbasis.
