The aim of the PhD project is to study how teachers in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) can enhance childre´s experience of well-being and happiness using nature as the learning environment. Use of nature has a positive impact on children´s health and development, but there is a need for more knowledge about how ECEC teachers can take advantage of nature´s pedagogical potential. It is necessary to explore ECEC teachers’ educational approaches and activities in nature, and how these can help children experience joy, happiness, self-confidence, and learn how to deal with adversity and problem solving. The project will investigate three questions. 1) What does existing theory and research tell us about ECEC teachers´ use of nature for educational purposes. 2) Examining, through observation, how ECEC teachers use nature in their daily work. 3) How can researcher and ECEC teachers in collaboration develop knowledge about educational approaches and activities in nature that contribute to strengthening children´s experience of well-being and happiness? The PhD project connects nature and education in a practical way. The results will be systematic and targeted, and useful for all staff in ECEC, regardless of educational background and experience. In addition, the knowledge that is developed will be relevant and useful for teacher education, ECEC owners, decision-makers, and others who want to further develop the educational practices with children in nature.

Litteraturstudien vil undersøke naturens potensial for barnehageansattes pedagogiske arbeid.
