The World Health Organization estimates that up to 180 000 healthcare workers have died due to COVID-19 until May 2021. The AEGIS dual-purpose helmet combines the advantages of facemasks, air-purifying respirators (PAPR), and surgical helmets (SH) into one novel respiratory protective device, tailored for the healthcare sector. The AEGIS helmet can be used as a modern SH in orthopedics and converted into a PAPR within a few seconds providing several hundred times better protection against bacteria, viruses, and particulates compared to N95 masks. Disinfection does not require complicated procedures, machines, and logistics. After a few minutes, the helmet is ready for the next user. In an emergency situation, hospital staff can carry on using known equipment.
The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated insufficient preparedness with adequate PPE. But even if abundantly available - surgical masks and even facemasks such as N95 often fail in providing adequate protection due to an imperfect fit. PAPRs avoid these problems but are impossible to disinfect by manual routines.
At AHUS, a dedicated team of orthopedic surgeons, engineers, and filter experts have instead developed a filter solution for existing SH, which renders them infection-safe. The invention was called “EURODPATER” and filters 99,95% of incoming particles with easy disinfection: after a few minutes, the device is again ready for use. We have produced a small series that are currently in use in the operating theaters, intensive care, and surveillance units under emergency clearance by the Norwegian FFI. All findings are published and a patent application is filed. The aim of this project is the development and commercialization of a novel helmet with an inbuilt “EURODAPTER” function. For this purpose, we will collaborate with a renowned R&D partner. Once finalized, a strong sales team will bring the helmet to the market. As far as we know, this is a novel product with no direct competitors in the market.
