CLIMIT-Program for CO2-håndtering

Advanced energy recovery and CO2 capture systems for a decarbonised ferroalloy industry

Alternative title: Avanserte energigjenvinnings- og CO2-fangstsystemer for en avkarbonisert ferrolegeringsindustri

Awarded: NOK 14.2 mill.

ADVENCCS is an ambitious project that aims to develop next-generation solutions for transitioning the ferroalloy industry towards climate neutrality within 2050. ADVENCCS will pursue a systematic approach to develop new knowledge and concepts that will show how tailor-made energy-efficient CO2 capture and improved energy recovery systems can be optimally integrated in current and adapted plant processes to facilitate a cost-effective and competitive decarbonisation of the Norwegian ferroalloy industry. Tailor-made CO2 capture will be developed with targeted design and optimisation of capture processes with industry-given constraints. The focus will be on novel solvents and sorbent based technologies. Breakthrough off-gas heat recovery concepts will be established with designs unconstrained by conventional manufacturing, and the potential for low-adhesion coatings for better fouling resistance will be investigated. Options for energy recovery from new heat sources will be explored. These technologies will be integrated in current and future industrial scenarios, and recommendations for transitioning the ferroalloy industry towards climate neutrality will be developed. The transferability of the ADVENCCS methodology and results to other industries and markets will be investigated on a European level. The Norwegian ferroalloy industry is currently responsible for around 3 Mt/y of CO2 emitted. ADVENCCS can thus help reducing Norway's total emissions by more than 5% and thereby significantly contribute to reaching the national climate goals.

Capturing CO2 from the ferroalloy industry and linking it to Northern Lights will contribute to value creation from the Longship project. Chain analysis of CO2 capture at two ferroalloy industrial sites with transport and storage through Northern Lights will be performed. The transferability of the ADVENCCS methodology and results to other industries and markets will be investigated on a European level.
