Recent policies and regulations dealing with increasing the use of green energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and market liberalization, such as the EU Clean Energy for All Europeans Package agreement completed in 2019, are seeking to promote new roles for citizens in the management of the self-produced renewable energy and the development of local energy markets. Smart Local Energy Systems (SLES) is a new concept considered a key approach aiming to support Net Zero gas emissions through decentralization and digitalization. It proposes the use of intelligent analysis to support correlated production, storage, and trading at a local scale to the reduction of CO2 emissions from buildings-related activities like environmental control, water heating, lighting or the use of IT infrastructure. This project aims to show how the digitalization of energy systems organized in a SLES facilitates the transition toward a green energy society, both by allowing the integration of existing resources and the adoption of new technologies. This is achieved by optimizing the use of distributed energy resources (renewable energy, heated water storage system, batteries) in an Energy Management System able to support the integration and correlation between the different energy sources according to outputs of the implemented modules, consumption requirements and tackling possible network failures, to collect and process data from these resources, along with consumption-related data. Based on these data the partners will build production, consumption, and room temperature propagation models using Artificial Intelligence to enable an energy-aware interaction of SLES components, thus optimizing the control of the Building Management System on the consumer side and the use of the available resources according to cost and user behaviour.

Having as a starting point the microgrid pilot, the specific objectives of the project are: - Leveraging digitalization of the energy consumer through the design of low energy hardware devices for data acquisition and control. - Building production, consumption, and room temperature propagation models using Artificial Intelligence to enable an energy-aware interaction of SLES components. - Building an energy management system to support the integration and correlation between the different energy sources according to outputs of the implemented modules, consumption requirements and tackling possible network failures.
