The Norwegian Public Roads Administration aims to build knowledge and competence in construction of very large floating structures in challenging environmental conditions on the west coast of Norway. This project is aimed towards understanding and documenting how a large floating structure can be safely and cost-effectively erected using multiple offshore construction vessels. This project plans on detailed investigation of fabrication, transport and installation of large floating bridges involving marine assets such that the operations can be done in a safe, timely and cost-effective way. The direct impact of this project is to build up internal competence in the company to execute large marine operations and help form guidelines and procedures for these operations. This study would have indirect impact on climate goals set by the Ministry of transport and the society in general by making marine operations during the installation of infrastructure safer, cheaper, and timely.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration aims to build knowledge and competence in construction of very large floating structures in challenging environmental conditions on the west coast of Norway. In pursuit of this goal, it is important to understand and document how a large floating structure can be safely and cost-effectively erected. Currently standards such as DNV RP C205, RP-N103, API RP 2MOP etc. are the most used guideline for modelling, analysis and prediction of environmental conditions as well guidance for calculating environmental loads acting on structures. The use case for this standard has been point structures and is seldom used for very large bridges. Installation of nonstandard structures involve several challenges including but not limited to, complicated operations, hydrodynamic and structural interactions, loading and uncertain environmental conditions. The available standards might not include methodologies to cover these challenges. It is therefore important to study installation methodology of the planned bridge in detail and identify and mitigate issues that might arise. This project plans on detailed investigation of fabrication, transport and installation of large floating bridges involving marine assets such that the operations can be done in a safe, timely and cost effective way. The project aims to develop safe methodologies for installation of such structures.
