Alternative title: E!196 - Upscaling of efficient hydrogen production

Awarded: NOK 1.7 mill.

The goal of the project is to improve the efficiency of alkaline electrolyser techology. Our collaboration partner Advanced Surface Plating has recently developed highly efficient nickel foam electrodes which will reduce LCOH by min. 14%. We will create an electrolyser cell simulation tool in order to find the most optimal design of the cells. The advanced nickel foam electrodes will be tested in todays cell design, and in the newly designed cell that will be produced by HydrogenPro.

The overall objective of the H2UP project is to improve alkaline electrolyser technology at cell and stack level. The project aims to prove the performance of newly developed activated nickel foam electrodes at cell level and at industrial stack. The activated electrodes will be used in electrolysers, thereby reducing LCOH (Levelized Cost of Hydrogen) with min. 14% if it is possible to transform the efficiency from electrode level to stack level. In addition, lye cooling will be reduced. If successful, ASP will have state-of-the-art electrodes ready for market penetration. The electrodes will be produced in ASP's newly established electrode production. The main goals are four-fold: i) To prove and document the efficiency of the activated nickel foam electrodes at cell/stack level, ii) become leading electrode supplier for the European green hydrogen production industry, iii) reduce the investment in lye cooling system and reduce cost for lye cooling during operation and iv) to develop a modelling program for the future design and optimization of the cell configuration and the electrolyser unit based on different customer requirements and specifications. The modelling program will be used for designing the prototype cell with activated nickel foam electrodes
