Alternative title: MinTre - Minimizing wood waste on construction sites through early phase planning

Awarded: NOK 6.5 mill.

The construction industry is often referred to as the 40% sector. The reason for this is that the construction industry worldwide uses around 40% of all available resources, including 40% of primary energy, while emitting 40% of greenhouse gas emissions and creating around 40% of total waste. In Norway, wood waste comprises 13% of all construction waste – 94% of this wood waste is incinerated for energy recovery. This waste leads to increased resource use, transport, treatment, and disposal, which in turn leads to increased costs and greenhouse gas emissions in construction projects. For contractors, waste involves associated disposal fees, but the largest cost is nevertheless the unnecessary purchase of the products that ultimately constitute this waste. Two issues that stand out when trying to reduce waste are the lack of planning measures in the early phase, and the lack of cooperation between actors in the value chain. Changes to the project scope are more readily made earlier in the planning phase, as changes late in the project lead to increased costs and have a higher probability of not being implemented. The MinTre project is aimed at the highest level of the waste pyramid – "create less waste" – so that the domino effects of unnecessary wood on the construction site can all be reduced, including costs, human impacts, resource consumption, and overall environmental impacts. The project will look at how this redundant resource can be minimized through decisions and processes implemented in the early phase of the construction project, and how the early-phase stakeholders can interact and communicate in the best possible way. To achieve these goals, MinTre includes project partners from all key resources in the early phase: contractors, consultants, architects, distributors and logistics suppliers, waste management companies, reuse consultants, and the client, together with the research and innovation partners.
