Multi-phase and wet gas meters are important to understand process behaviour for optimum production. For the North Sea, unmanned platform development is a desirable, but existing sensors systems provide sensors in contact with the medium, which may lead to leakage, require maintenance by process shut-down and are costly/heavy. Xsens AS, a supplier of clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters, plan to integrate wet gas measurement, as enhancement to their existing clamp-on gas flow meters. A multi-phase model software, will developed and adjusted for integration to the clamp-on wet gas meter system. NORCE Research Institute expertise will work together Xsens AS and industry partner AkerBP to complete this development, prior offshore qualification, beginning of 2025. The R&D focus is sensor system interaction with multi-phase model software for reduced uncertainty at different process conditions. Improved ultrasonic sensor signal processing and software development will be addressed. The project is a significant step towards clamp-on multi-phase flow meter for a wider coverage of multiphase flow meters by clamp-on technology and project results are applicable to measurement of other complex fluids such as CO2 and explosive process media, such as LNG, Hydrogen.

Multi-phase and wet gas meters are important to optimum oil and gas field drainage, production well control and flow assurance. For NCS marginal fields, unmanned platform development is a desirable, but existing in-line wet gas flow meters and their intrusive sensors contribute to unwanted integrity risk, require maintenance by process shut-down and are costly/heavy. Xsens AS, a supplier of multi-path clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter to NCS and the global offshore market, plan to integrate new fluid fraction sensors interacting with a multi-phase model software, as enhancement to their existing ultrasonic clamp-on gas flow meter, for wet gas measurement. The multi-phase model software, developed by well model and control software supplier Kelda Dynamics AS, will be further developed and adjusted for integration to the clamp-on wet gas meter system. NORCE Research Institute experts within multi-phase modelling and multi-phase meter uncertainty analysis will work together Xsens AS, Kelda Dynamics and industry partner AkerBP to complete this development, prior to a full-scale TRL6 offshore qualification test 2nd half of 2024 and beginning of 2025. The R&D focus is sensor system interaction with multi-phase model software for reduced uncertainty of wet gas liquid fraction rate measurement, at different process conditions, changing with liquid content pressure, temperature. Ultrasonic sensor and sensor signal processing software development will be addressed, as well as methods for dynamic uncertainty correction. The project is a significant step towards clamp-on multi-phase flow meter for a wider coverage of multiphase flow meters by clamp-on technology and project results are applicable to other complex and critical flow measurement applications, such as LNG, Hydrogen and CO2.
