Increased use and reuse of local materials in construction projects in Svalbard

Awarded: NOK 0.20 mill.

SINTEF aim to organize two workshops on Svalbard with local participants to discuss challenges and opportunities due to circular material management and potential use and reuse of local rock material. Several potential partners will be invited to the workshops. This includes infrastructure owners, contractors, research community and consultants. The overarching goal of the workshop is to discuss how and what is required to develop a more resource efficient material use in a region heavily dependent on material import. Transportation of rock materials are mainly related to the highest costs and greenhouse emissions in infrastructure projects. For Svalbard, the access to local rock materials is limited. Experiences from equivalent projects on the mainland shows that improvement in logistics and increased circularity can lead to significant improvement in resource extraction, greenhouse gas footprint and better mass logistics.
