The demand for fish is increasing, and thus also feed for fish. At the same time, 1/3 of all food produced is never eaten. The project Insects as a new and sustainable feed raw material in fish feed attempts to link these challenges in a circular solution, where previous nutrients are upcycled into a protein-rich and health-promoting ingredient for fish feed. Insects are highly effective at converting nutrients into new valuable proteins and are naturally resistant to toxins and diseases that could occur in food waste. Insects are a natural part of the diet of young fish, and research shows that insects can improve fish health. However, there are some challenges that need to be solved for insects fed on residual raw materials to be used in fish farming on a larger scale. The first is that the nutritional content of the larvae varies according to what they eat, and available raw materials vary by season for insect producers who specialize in circular economy. The project aims to establish a prescription management system for mixing substrate to the insects that allows to achieve stable, predictable and favorable nutritional values in the insect products. The project will also map and characterize available raw materials for the best possible utilization in accordance with the prescription management system, and to optimize production. Experiments will also be carried out to assess how important the substrate composition is in the different life phases of the insects. The second challenge is related to the processing of the larvae. The processing steps used today are cost- and energy-intensive and must be streamlined in order to compete on price. The quality of the products is affected by processing, so relevant methods must be tested against the desired nutritional composition. The goal of the project will be to find the most appropriate methods to maintain quality, reduce energy consumption and time, while keeping processing as simple as possible.
