The Hy-Ekotank project will demonstrate the retrofitting of a hydrogen storage and fuel cell system to an existing oil tanker to demonstrate a 60% reduction in total CO2-eq emissions and 100% reduction in total CO2-eq emissions in port. This project aims to help meet the 2030 emission targets of 55% reduction in CO2-eq emissions from transportation.
In the Hy-Ekotank project, we will:
• Develop a new system solution to install a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell system and pressurised hydrogen storage solution on an existing chemical and oil tanker.
• Develop new processes for operating the vessel with hydrogen and loading hydrogen onboard.
• Demonstrate that hydrogen can be supplied as a new service in Scandinavia.
The project aims to install approximately 2.4 MW of fuel cell power and a pressurized hydrogen storage with 4 to 6 tons hydrogen capacity. The installation is planned on either the Ek-Stream or the Ek-River chemical and oil tankers owned by Ektank.
