Why do we struggle to understand past international relations, existing international challenges and future possible international transformations? The starting assumption of COURIER is that this struggle stems from incomplete ways of thinking about the subject matter of “International Relations”. A lack of understanding of the importance of conceptual change, leads to conceptual amnesia and conceptual naturalisation.
The goal of COURIER is to overcome these problems. It will do so through breaking new intellectual ground, by a) challenging the conceptual amnesia, presentism and teleology of historical analyses of international relations and by b) making analyses of present international relations sensitive to the power of naming the world to be known by de-naturalising taken for granted concepts.
