Subject Fields:

The project INDUCE focuses on increasing the efficiency and resource optimization of existing seafood systems and fisheries and at the same time upscaling aquaculture production, ensuring neutral or positive environment impacts. The aim is to have long-term positive impacts on food nutrition and security, economic competitiveness, social inclusion and ecological resilience for future generations.

Current trends and projections in seafood consumption indicate that demand for seafood is set to double by 2050 (NewSeas, 2022). By contrast, the majority of fish stocks are at maximum sustainable yield and aquaculture is so far concentrated on a small number of high-value, resource-intensive species. In the context of a burgeoning global population, "farming the sea” is already an inevitability. However, simply ramping up production beyond environmental and ecological carrying capacities is not sustainable. The solutions are therefore to 1) increase the efficiency and resource optimization of existing seafood systems and fisheries, whilst 2) upscaling sustainable aquaculture production, ensuring neutral or positive environmental impacts. In the context of global emerging threats, this approach aims to have long-term positive impacts on food nutrition and security, economic competitiveness, social inclusion and ecological resilience for future generations. This is the core ambition of INDUCE.
