Metal production is energy demanding and generates significant amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. The Norwegian metallurgical industry has for quite some time requested new technology which can facilitate reduced greenhouse gas emissions. In short term, the only option is to replace fossil reductant materials with biobased carbon reductant materials. So far, no biocarbon reductant materials have been developed suitable for production of manganese alloys. Eramet Norway is a leading producer of manganese alloys. Eramet Norway aims at being the most climate- and environmentally friendly producer within its niche. Eramet Norway aims at reducing fossil CO2 emissions by at least 43% by 2030, which corresponds to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 370.000 tons CO2 annually or about 3% of the total emissions from the Norwegian process industry. Such a reduction in CO2 emissions will be obtained by implementing use of 120.000 tons HP biocarbon in the manganese alloys production. The technology for producing HP Biocarbon enables the use of waste wood and by-products from the Norwegian forest industry as raw materials. This will contribute to a more efficient circular economy with better resource utilization, increased material recycling and potential for increased value creation in both wood processing industry and the recycling industry. The Bio4Metal project aims at establishing a platform for investing in a scalable, module scalable demonstration plant with a capacity of producing approx. 5,000 tons of HP biocarbon annually. The Bio4Metal consortium includes possible end users of HP Biocarbon in the metallurgical industry, a pyrolysis technology supplier, possible feedstock suppliers and producers of HP Biocarbon in wood processing industry and recycling industry, a nationally leading R&D actor within pyrolysis technology and a catapult center with suitable facilities for testing production of manganese alloys in pilot scale.
