HAVBRUK2-Stort program for havbruksforskning

Microalgal omega-3 rich feed ingredient from mixed organic wastes

Alternative title: Mikroalger fra blandet organisk avfall som omega-3 rik fôringrediens.

Awarded: NOK 7.8 mill.

Food waste is a significant component of solid waste and its management poses increasing challenges. Concomitantly, the aquaculture sector struggles to find sustainable sources of omega-3 that can replace the limited fish oils. This project focuses on the development of industrial protocols that will upcycle the nutrients in mixed organic wastes (such as catering and households) as fertilizer for the production of omega-3 rich microalgae which can be used in main aquaculture feed formulations, including salmon feed. The project is divided into three parts, inclunding development of the microalgal fermentation protocol, product demonstration in feeding trials, and life cycle analysis of the complete value-chain from waste to feed.
