SINTEF Ocean has developed a technology that can contribute to more automated handling of fish and seafood with robots, cameras, and AI algorithms. Most automation solutions in today's seafood industry consist of specialized machines that perform one specific processing task. These machines handle large volumes of fish efficiently but often cannot manage significant variations in raw materials and appearance, such as piles of fish of different species and sizes under varying lighting conditions. More flexible machines that can handle such variations and perform multiple tasks could potentially contribute to more efficient processing and increased processing in Norway. The goal of this project has been to assess the need for the developed automation technology in the seafood industry. Through market research and customer visits, current challenges and automation needs have been identified among various stakeholders, including whitefish landing facilities, fishing vessels, and salmon processing factories. The work has shown that there is a significant customer demand for more automation in various parts of the seafood industry. Further efforts will focus on refining the methodology and commercializing the solution.
