Valvular heart disease (VHD) is referred to as the next cardiac epidemic due to an imminent increase in the elderly population expected over the next decades. The treatment alternatives for VHD have increased significantly the last years including percutaneous techniques, in addition to conventional valve repair or replacement through open-heart surgery. The final decision of treatment is today mainly based on expert judgement and includes medical imaging recordings and clinical assessment by the heart valve team at the hospitals. The decision is highly subjective and may differ significantly from one heart center to another. There is a great need for standardized and more objective criteria to support the decision process to ensure positive clinical outcomes and cost-effective treatment strategies. The aim of the CardioSim Decision Support System is to aid cardiologists and cardiac surgeons in identifying the optimal treatment for each individual patient suffering from VHD by precisely predicting the individual flow response to alternative interventional techniques, in an objective and evidence-based manner. This will be achieved by utilizing the predictive power of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations based on patient-specific medical imaging data. The CardioSim technology is the result of a long-term collaboration between SINTEF and Haukeland University Hospital. In the CardioSim project, we are aligning multiple research areas within SINTEF and translating this knowledge into cardiovascular research. Combining SINTEF’s expertise with the highly experienced cardiologists and cardiac surgeons at Haukeland, enables the development of the CardioSim Decision Support System.
