Response of shallow marine prokaryote ecosystems in the Boreal Ocean to the Permo-Triassic climate crisis (RiS ID: 12064)

Awarded: NOK 92,995

This project aims to reconstruct the microbial community in the shallow Boreal Ocean during the environmental crisis at the Permian/Triassic boundary that coincided with the most severe mass extinction in Earth’s history. By collecting new samples for lipid biomarker analysis at three Permian-Triassic sections (Tschermakfjellet, Vardebukta, Belvedere), new insights into the timing and magnitude of the extinction event will be gained. The results from this project will be integrated with lower latitude settings of the shallow marine ecosystem in the frame of my PhD thesis. With Svalbard representing the Boreal realm, this fieldwork is essential to increase the latitudinal range of the analysis, thereby increasing the knowledge of the response of the microbial community to the Permian-Triassic climate crisis on a more global scale. In addition, drone footage of the outcrops will be gathered during the fieldwork, resulting in high-resolution digital 3D models, which will be openly accessible and will contribute to the conservation of the Svalbard archipelago.
