Tracing warm Atlantic Water in Tempelfjorden, Svalbard - RiS ID 12116

Awarded: NOK 98,482

This project uses a combination of high-resolution modelling and observations in Tempelfjorden, a side fjord of Isfjorden with 2 marine-terminating glaciers (MTGs), to investigate under which conditions Atlantic Water (AW) enters the fjord, how it affects MTGs and how it will change with an enhanced and warmed AW inflow. With warming AW (Walczowski et al., 2017), there is an increased interest in how this affects the stability of MTGs (Skogseth et al., 2020), as an increase in water temperatures could lead to increasing melt rates and therefore a destabilisation of the glaciers (Luckman et al., 2015). A better understanding of the circulation in fjords with MTGs is crucial in quantifying the effect of enhancement and shallowing of AW on MTGs.
