Accurate biomass estimation remains the holy grail of salmon aquaculture, critical to maximizing resource-use efficiency, productivity, and profitability. Established methods relying on periodic, manual on-site sampling are costly, labor-intensive/time-consuming, inaccurate, and stressful for fish. Ace Aquatec (UK) and Cryoocyte (Norway) will develop innovative technology-based services to accurately estimate salmon biomass from cage to harvest. Ace Aquatec will develop hardware (underwater and surface high-zoom/varifocal stereo cameras) and software (computer vision and machine learning algorithms, data platform) solutions for automatic, near-real-time, and accurate biomass estimation and quality grading on an individual fish basis. This data will be integrated within Cryoocyte's data analytics platform to develop accurate predictive models for optimum harvest time, biomass, quality, and mortality rate. This breakthrough biomass estimation technology will be validated and demonstrated at salmon farms and processors in the UK and Norway, with Scotland being responsible for 7% and Norway being responsible for 50% of global farmed Atlantic salmon production.
