PES-HORISONT-EU-PES Horisont Europa

Novel Counter-Rotating Vertical Turbine for deep-sea floating offshore wind applications (CRVT)

Awarded: NOK 0.26 mill.

Project Number:

344762

Project Period:

2023 - 2023

Location:

The PES project will set the conditions to design a winning proposal for critical technologies for the floating offshore wind farms of the future within the Horizon Europe Framework. Within this project we are bringing together a balanced consortium (i.e. different company sizes, research organisations and businesses, different EU countries) with the best competences within the floating wind value chain: materials (wood, aluminium), power & generators, vertical turbine design, subsea technology, aerodynamics, construction & operation, etc. The PES project focus on the preparation of the proposal by: 1) concept scoping and positioning the project towards the EU call; 2) consolidating the partnerships; 3) identifying the project stakeholder and partners groups; 4) reviewing and stating the state-of-the art against the innovation; 5) designing a work plan and budget with the input from all participants in the consortium; and 6) detailing the impact the project will have for the partners, the target groups and the society in general. In the RIA project, we will investigate the suitability of sustainable materials and novel components as well as their scalability towards an innovative and environmental-friendly 15 MW FOW design. We will seek validation of the design through material evaluation and testing, modelling, simulations of different scenarios, economies of scale, and evaluation of the environmental impact of the novel design. Our objectives are to reduce the mass of the tower, R&D a subsea power feed that withstands 15MW, validate the aerodynamics, and assess techno-economical, ecological and societal impact of the novel design. The main expected impact that will benefit wind energy developers, owners, and operators is that the novel design will enable to develop floating offshore wind farms that are more compact and can produce more energy in deep-sea regions (accounting for 80% of the area).
