Edge AI Technologies for Optimised Performance Embedded Processing

Alternative title: Edge AI-teknologier for optimalisert ytelse for innebygd prosessering

Awarded: NOK 9.7 mill.

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge brings a myriad of opportunities, including higher processing speeds to allow real-time analytics, greater scalability to work with large amounts of data, and improved cybersecurity as less data is processed externally or off-premises. EdgeAI project is a key initiative for the European digital transition towards intelligent processing solutions at the edge. EdgeAI develops new electronic components and systems, processing architectures, connectivity, software, algorithms, and middleware by combining microelectronics, AI, embedded systems, and edge computing. It demonstrates the applicability of the developed edge AI hardware/software/algorithms approaches across various vertical solutions, considering the inherent security, trust, and energy efficiency demands in several use cases. The project addresses the layers of a full-edge AI technology stack and application: sensors, hardware, SW/HW interfaces, AI frameworks, algorithms, neural network architectures/topologies and new learning data types and methods. EdgeAI project aims to positively influence the EU's climate-neutral ambitions by having a significant impact on the Green Deal in two directions: one is by increasing energy efficiency and lowering the power consumption of the electronic components, algorithms, and AI methods at the edge and the other is by increasing the processing capabilities and reducing the overall energy consumption and CO2 footprint of the applications that use edge AI components. The project aims to substantially impact the European Chips Act as the technology development will identify several challenges that can be put forward as new topics for growth within the next Chips JU European partnership calls. With 49 partners across 11 countries and a total budget of €35.4 million, Edge AI addresses 5 value chains with twenty demonstrators: digital industry, energy, agrifood & beverage, mobility, and digital society.

EdgeAI advances the edge AI technology development according to the AI technology stack by addressing the research and innovation across the stack layers from AI hardware, interfaces, frameworks, software, algorithms, architectures and methods and data types to applications in five industrial sectors: Digital Industry, Energy, Agri-food and Beverage, Mobility, and Digital Society. EdgeAI develops new electronic components and systems, processing architectures, connectivity, software, algorithms, and middleware by combining microelectronics, AI, embedded systems, and edge computing. It aims to demonstrate the applicability of the developed edge AI hardware/software/algorithms approaches across various vertical solutions, considering the inherent security, trust, and energy efficiency demands in several use cases. The project accelerates edge AI processing adoption in different application domains through twenty reference demonstrators in the five industrial sectors. The demonstrators validate the benefits and advances of edge AI technologies developed in the EdgeAI project.
