A Weeklong Hackathon to Develop Spatio-Temporal Models Across the Strategic Objectives of Svalbard

Awarded: NOK 0.50 mill.

We propose to host two hackathon-style workshops to engage the Svalbard research community in the adoption and development of the new spatio-temporal modeling R package, 4D-Modeller (4DM). The 4DM package has been developed to tackle spatio-temporal problems at all scales and is built on a Bayesian Hierarchical Model developed during the GlobalMass project (Sha et al., 2019; www.globalmass.eu). The 4DM package has already been applied to problems related to COVID-19 transmission, Norwegian hydropower generation, and glacial lake dynamics in the Tibetan Plateau, solving previously computationally intractable problems. The first hackathon will coincide with the Svalbard Science Forum meeting in November 2023, with a second workshop planned for Spring 2024 to extend the new functionality and use cases developed in the first workshop to new research communities. The Svalbard research community's diverse biogeochemical and geophysical processes make it an ideal laboratory to develop and exploit the capabilities of 4DM to address important research questions. These hackathons will integrate the community in a shared data analytics platform and incorporate their needs directly into the platform's development.
