Norwegian Hydrogen CPHV IA PES

Awarded: NOK 0.30 mill.

Meeting the growing demand for green energy has become a critical priority worldwide to achieve a neutral carbon footprint. To accomplish this goal, the EU has set ambitious climate targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and to achieve zero-net emissions by 2050. This poses a challenge for all sectors of the economy, including energy, transport, industry and agriculture. In this regard, green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources (e.g. wind power), has the potential to play a significant role in the path towards a decarbonised economy. Green hydrogen and its by-products (heat and oxygen) can be implemented and used in a wide range of sectors, including transport, industry and heating, replacing the need for fossil fuels. However, the use of hydrogen as green energy source in Europe is still in early stages. The existing infrastructures for safe and efficient distribution and storage of hydrogen are limited, which poses a challenge in terms of transporting and delivering green energy in a cost-effective manner to the end users. For this reason, the delivery methods of green hydrogen, and its by-products, will need to be tailored and supported by significant investments to meet the specific requirements of various sectors, in a way that zero emissions and zero energy waste are achieved, ensuring a decarbonised value chain.
