The aim of this doctoral project is to gain more knowledge about student employment. To what extent and in which direction does it affect academic performance, such as drop-out, time-to-degree and grades? What about later labour market outcomes, such as earnings and probability of employment? Does it matter what type of work the student have? Is, for example, a study relevant employment more beneficial / less detrimental than an irrelevant employment? These are some of the questions I seek to answer in this project. Furthermore, I will try to investigate whether there are socioeconomic differences regarding amounts and effects of student work. In theory, student employment may affect academic and later labour marked outcomes both positive and negative. It may affect academic performance and later labour marked success positive through the student to acquiring new skills, valuable contacts and signalling high working capacity. On the other hand, time is a limited resource, and time spent on student employment may reduce time spent on studying, that further may affect academic performance and there through labour marked outcome negative. Empirical results also indicate that student employment may have both positive and negative effect on academic and later labour marked outcomes. However, these results are mainly from other countries. Since Norwegian conditions, regarding educational system and labour marked, are somewhat different from other nations, these findings may not be directly transferable to Norway. One of them main aims of this project is therefor to increase the knowledge about student employment, and possible effects on academic and labour marked outcomes, in a Norwegian context. At the same time, I also aim to contribute to the international literature, by applying advanced methods alongside rich administrative data, which can make it possible to uncover causal relationship, not only correlations.
