Smart5Null connects smart people with smart technology to achieve zero-defect production in two Norwegian companies in the wood products industry. To ensure the survival of this industry in a high-cost country like Norway, the project embraces new digital technologies while also developing and optimizing employee skills at every level. This aligns closely with the European Commission’s vision for Industry 5.0, where technology is integrated with people at the center to promote sustainable development and innovation. At the start of the project, there were no ready-made solutions—technological or organizational—that companies could easily adopt with low risk to achieve zero-defect production within the framework of Industry 5.0. In this sense, Smart5Null is pioneering the application of Industry 5.0 in Norway’s wood products industry.
The project is developing both a digital infrastructure and corresponding leadership competence tailored for Industry 5.0. At Nordic Door, the project owner, this infrastructure is already being implemented with promising early results. At Gilje Tre, the same infrastructure is being tested in a specific use case for quality control of incoming materials. The project also explores the integration of artificial intelligence in several areas, supported by this digital infrastructure. In addition, a new concept called “Smart Collaboration” is being developed and tested. This approach focuses on cooperation between humans and machines—including algorithms—while safeguarding human autonomy, involvement, and participation in digitalized production processes. So far results have been presented in four peer reviewed conference papers, and one patent is pending.
The ultimate goal of Smart5Null is to create an environment where humans and machines can learn faster together, leading to more profitable and sustainable production processes and products. This is achieved through optimal use of materials, machinery, and workspace, along with improved quality, shorter lead times, and greater flexibility.
Smart5Null builds on the Norwegian tradition of employee participation and is methodologically grounded in action research and use-case methodology.
En nullvisjon for trevareindustrien innebærer null feil, null sløsing, og null utslipp. Smart5Null realiserer dette ved å koble smarte mennesker med smart teknologi for nullfeilsproduksjon i Industri 5.0.
Dersom trevareindustrien skal overleve i et høykostland som Norge må bransjen ta i bruk nye digitale teknologier og samtidig ta i bruk og videreutvikle ansattes kompetanse på alle nivåer. Dette samsvarer godt med EU kommisjonens visjon for Industri 5.0, der ny teknologi tas i bruk i samspill med mennesker for å realisere bærekraftig utvikling og innovasjon. I dag finnes det ingen ferdige løsninger, verken teknologisk eller organisatorisk, som en bedrift med lav risiko kan kjøpe og implementere for å oppnå nullfeilsproduksjon i en Industri 5.0 kontekst. Smart5Null vil være den første anvendelsen av Industri 5.0 i trevareindustrien i Norge. I prosjektet vil vi utvikle ny digital infrastruktur og ledelseskompetanse tilpasset Industri 5.0, kombinert med Kunstig Intelligens (AI) og "Smart Samhandling", et nytt og innovativt konsept for samhandling mellom mennesker og maskiner, inkludert algoritmer, som ivaretar autonomi, involvering og medvirkning av menneskene i digitaliserte produksjonsprosessen. Dette vil også bli en viktig innovasjon internasjonalt. Målet er at mennesker og maskiner skal lære raskere sammen for å utvikle mer lønnsomme og bærekraftige produksjonsprosesser og produkter gjennom økt material, maskin og areal utnyttelse, økt kvalitet, kortere ledetid og økt fleksibilitet som igjen muliggjør graden av kundetilpasning som markedet i økende grad etterspør. Smart5Null bygger dermed på en lang norsk tradisjon for medvirkning av ansatte og baserer seg metodisk på aksjonsforskning og use-case metodikk.
