Making Positive Energy Districts (Making PEDs). Decision-making digital twins for climate neutral PEDs.

Alternative title: Positive energidistrikter (PED). Digitale tvillinger for utvikling av klimanøytrale positive energidistrikter.

Awarded: NOK 4.7 mill.

The MAKING PEDs project focuses on creating Digital Twins as a decision support tool for cities. The 11 international partners collaborate to help cities on their path towards climate neutrality to master complexity and making decision-making easier while engaging citizens in urban district regeneration. The use of simulation tools in urban contexts, combined with 2D or 3D web-based visualization platforms provides valuable support for decision-makers and helps ensure citizen engagement. To improve the sustainability of the built environment in neighbourhoods and urban areas, innovative social and economic models should be applied within a global LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and climate perspective, taking into account mobility, circularity and co-creation processes involving public authorities and citizens. The goal of the Making PEDs project is not only to research and plan climate-neutral Positive Energy Districts (PEDs), but also to facilitate their practical implementation. This is achieved by providing Digital Twins as tools to support decision-making and urban transformation processes. Specifically, research on frameworks, 3D CityGML-based methods and tools will focus on: - Holistic assessment of climate-neutral Positive Energy Districts. - Reliable prediction of potential sustainability and business scenarios for large-scale energy retrofits of the built environment. - The impact of implementing dedicated user groups in the positive energy districts (Citizen Energy Communities). The digital twins and models will be tested and further developed while supporting the decision-making processes for the creation of four climate-neutral districts in Europe These districts will serve as Urban Living Labs (ULLs) in the cities of Linz (Austria), Civitavecchia-Roma (Italy), Sant Esteve de Palautordera (Spain) and Bærum (Norway).

The use of simulation tools in the urban context and connected to 2D or 3D web-based visualization applications which are valuable tools for decision-makers and citizen’s engagement. If we talk about improving the sustainability of the building stock in vulnerable neighbourhoods, innovative social and economic models need to be considered under a global LCA/Climate change perspective having in mind interactions with mobility, circularity and co-creation processes with public authorities and citizens. The aim of the Making PEDs project is therefore not only to research and plan Climate Neutral PEDs but also to facilitate the transition into practice providing Digital Twins as a means to support decision-making and participatory urban transformation processes. Specifically, as key elements in PEDs, research on assessment frameworks, 3D cityGML-based methods and tools will focus on: - Holistic assessment towards Climate Neutral PEDs. - Reliable prediction of potential sustainability and business scenarios on Large-Scale energy retrofitting actions of the building stock. - Impact of Citizen Energy Communities (CECs). Developed digital twins and models will be tested and refined while supporting decision-making processes for the regeneration of four districts in Europe aiming to climate neutrality, acting as Urban Living Labs (ULLs), in the cities of Linz (Austria), Civitavecchia-Rome (Italy), Palma (Spain) and Bærum (Norway)
